ROCK HILL, South Carolina, and SHELTON, Connecticut, July 8, 2024 – Today, 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD), a leading additive manufacturing solutions provider, and Precision Resource, a leader in the production of critical components for the automotive, heavy-duty, aerospace, and medical device industries, announced they have entered a strategic partnership to scale and accelerate additive manufacturing. Combining both organizations’ deep applications expertise with 3D Systems’ Direct Metal Printing (DMP) platform will enable a faster path to market for applications in high-criticality industries. As part of this agreement, Precision Resource is purchasing two 3D Systems DMP Flex 350 Dual 3D printers to be part of the manufacturing workflow in its AS9100-certified Huntington Beach, California facility. The seamless integration of 3D Systems’ industry-leading DMP technology into Precision Resource’s production value processes, complemented by 5-axis machine centers and advanced inspection systems, will expand its portfolio of precision metal forming processes – offering new solutions to meet the evolving needs of Precision Resource’s customers and open new markets for the company.

Engineers from 3D Systems’ Application Innovation Group (AIG) partnered with the Precision Resource team to develop this solution. Both teams possess deep expertise in metal manufacturing processes as well as in high-value applications across a variety of industries. This engineering expertise combined with 3D Systems’ DMP technology, and Precision Resource’s extensive secondary finishing capabilities resulted in an efficient and robust, end-to-end manufacturing solution for AM parts to meet the performance needs of high criticality components and solve lingering supply chain issues through vertical integration.

3D Systems’ DMP Flex 350 platform is designed for flexible application use from application development to serial production. The quick swap build modules and fast powder recycling help accelerate production, and a central server manages print jobs, materials, settings, and maintenance to facilitate the 24/7 productivity. Due to the unique vacuum chamber concept of the DMP Flex 350 printers, argon gas consumption is heavily reduced while delivering best-in-class oxygen purity (<25 ppm) resulting in exceptionally strong parts of high chemical purity, better metallurgical properties, and exceptional surface finish. The printer also includes 3DXpert software that supports every step of the additive manufacturing workflow from design to post-processing, to quickly and efficiently transition from a 3D model to successfully printed parts.

“We are excited to partner with 3D Systems, a company that shares our dedication to excellence and innovation,” said Chris Gratton, general manager, Precision Resource. “This partnership allows us to leverage the latest advancements in metal additive manufacturing, further positioning Precision Resource at the forefront of technological progress. This expansion into metal additive printing underscores Precision Resource’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional value to our clients, customers, partners, and stakeholders. As we embark on this exciting new chapter, we remain dedicated to our mission of excellence and continuous improvement.”

“Manufacturing parts for high-criticality industries require precision without compromise,” said Jeph Ruppert, vice president, technical business development, 3D Systems. “Companies focusing on these areas require constant innovation to meet the accuracy, speed, reliability, and productivity demands of increasingly complex production. Bringing together the industry-leading technology and applications expertise of 3D Systems and Precision Resource will deliver increased quality, improved total cost of ownership, reduced time to market, and minimized supply chain disruption. I’m looking forward to seeing how our collaboration can amplify and accelerate the potential of metal AM.”

We are very pleased to announce a successful project with the “Arbeitskreis Feinschneiden” a workgroup initiated by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University, Germany, as a strategic research network for international and innovative companies in the fineblanking sector.

The project’s focus was to test the effectiveness (wear resistance) of using tungsten carbide material for the active cutting elements to fineblank high-strength steel.

In cooperation with the team of the WZL our Technical Center in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada had completely redesigned the fineblanking tool to ensure exact and rigid position of the active cutting elements, which is essential for blanking with carbide cutting components.

The new tool design was a result of completing a comprehensive review of all tool-related influences that could cause a premature failure of the blank punch. This task was accomplished with support and additional recommendations from our experienced team in Canada.

The tool’s design was brought to life as each and every element was 100% manufactured, assembled and tested at out Technical Center and parameters optimized at our Canadian Production facility using our Feintool XFT 2500 Speed Servo Press before it was sent to the WZL team in Germany.

The new tool was then handed over to the WZL team of the RWTH Aachen University for a series of tests using scientifically developed methods on their equivalent XFT 2500 servo press. After process control was optimized the tool made a series of 10,000 strokes with carbide and conventional HSS punches.

The test results specifically compared the wear characteristics of carbide to conventional HSS (high-speed-steel) cutting components. The conventional HSS cutting components was almost at the end of its service life while the carbide showed little to no wear, thereby increasing tool life by a factor of 20.

On behalf of Precision Resource, we would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who was involved in this successful collaboration and project. As we are committed to support the advancement of fineblanking technology and innovation, we look forward to support more future projects.

Illinois Division Makes a Move

Illinois Division Makes a Move

Precision Resource, Inc. announced that it’s Illinois Division has moved to a new facility…

Precision Resource, Inc. announced that its Illinois Division has moved into a new facility at 700 Hickory Hill Drive, Vernon Hills, Illinois.

Customers and employees alike are excited about the new, state-of-the-art building. The Illinois Team had been evaluating alternative manufacturing locations after the acquisition of Chicago Fineblanking Corporation in 2001. Initially, the division looked at adding on to the existing building, but the cost of expansion plus the cost of renovating to meet both Precision Resource standards and customer expectations turned out to be almost as costly as starting over.

“So, that’s what we did,” Curt Krueger, Division Manager, summed up. “We looked all over northern Illinois for the ideal location. And wouldn’t you know we finally found it right here, in our own back yard.” The site of the new building is literally around the corner from the former division location.

Architects completed plans for a 60,000 sq. ft. addition and the renovation of an existing 30,000 sq. ft. building on the site, for a total of 90,000 sq. ft. Future expansion is also possible. Builders broke ground in July 2007, and a Move Strategy Team was assembled to plan a smooth move and transition to the new building. Customer requalification activity took place throughout the move.

“We’re all enthusiastic about this change; it’s a great building in a great location, and it really enhances our ability to meet our customers’ needs,” concludes Division Manager Curt Krueger.

Precision Resource, Inc., a leading supplier of precision metal components manufactured with the fineblanking technology, today announced that it has established a new Technical Center at 10 Cherry Blossom Road, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, right next door to the Cambridge Plant, an existing production facility.

As part of a broad-based reorganization plan, production from the company’s former Kitchener Plant has been transferred to the Cambridge Plant and other Precision Resource facilities.  A core group of employees from the Kitchener Plant, including Division Manager, Kaveh Vafaei, are managing and staffing the new facility.  The Technical Center will design and build fineblank tooling for all Precision Resource production facilities and be the center of development for the company’s fineblanking technology.

“The Kitchener plant was a leased building that was not well suited to the new focus of the group,” company President Peter Wolcott said.  “The new building is purpose-designed to maximize efficiency and will be an excellent showcase for our capabilities.” In addition to housing a fully equipped tool room and a PATEC fine-cold-forming press, one 630 ton fineblanking press also will be installed there.  The fineblanking press will be used for tool trials, developmental projects and selected production jobs.

“Another advantage of our location is that many of the engineering offices of our key automotive customers are close by in Ontario and the greater Detroit area, so we are better able to support our customers on advance projects,” Kaveh Vafaei says.

Research and development will be another important facet of the Technical Center’s mission.  “The Technical Center will be an ideal incubator to develop important new processes and will help the whole company push the state of the art in fineblanking and other cold forming technologies,” states Corporate Engineering Director Mark Polatsek.

Headquartered in Shelton, CT, Precision Resource specializes in the supply of complex components and assemblies using the fineblanking technology.  The company markets its products to the automotive, electronics, power tool, and industrial markets primarily.  The company also employs a wide array of secondary finishing technologies, including double disc grinding, fine-grinding, honing, plastic over-molding, and CNC machining, in order to supply very tightly toleranced complete solutions to its customers.
